Birzai-Birzh Jews on 1937

The Excel file Jewish land plots…. is a list of Birzai Jewish property owners from 1937. The list also includes the parcel number of the properties, the street address from 1937 and the street address that corresponds to today’s city map. In some areas, there has been major repurposing of the land and the 1937 streets no longer exist.

The PDF attachment (modernmap_birzai) has three pages. On page 1 is a 1937 map of the Birzai neighbourhood where many of the Jewish families who appear on the Excel sheet lived. The parcel numbers on the map correspond exactly to the parcel numbers in the Excel sheet. On page 2 and 3 are two versions of the current map of Birzai side-by-side with the 1937 map. When you tour Birzai, you can use the maps to find the current location of the 1937 properties.

The second Excel attachment (List from phonebook) is a compilation of Jewish families who had a phone listed in the Birzai phonebook in the period 1928-1940. Included in the list are the street address of the family and the profession (if known) of the man/woman who owned the phone. X have been placed in column A if the owner is one of the victims included in the Memorial of Holocaust victims in Pakamponys.

The works has been done by Prof. Jonathan Dorfan (USA) and Birzai district museum ‘Sėla’.
